Get Up and Go Run!!!  Where Does the Motivation Come From on a Rainy Day?

When it doesn’t come from within, you are forced to look outside. Right???  But on a cold rainy day that feels more like fall than spring?  How?

This was my day yesterday. Cold and rainy. A misty rain that would sometimes become droplets then a slight downpour. I struggled all day with the idea of going for a run. I recently updated my iTunes running mix with a bunch of new songs that I love. Right now, nothing gets me up a hill like “Whiskey in the Jar” and “Fat Bottomed Girls”.

I have recently increased my running miles with the goal of running a half marathon in September. The longest race distance I have done so far is the 10k. I have run 10 miles in the past. Seems like forever ago though. The day’s pre-kids when my husband and I could lace up and run together at a moments notice!  That does not happen today. My CrossFit training has kept me fit and strong, but I really want to increase my cardiovascular stamina and distance running is my favorite way to do that. I am addicted to the runners high….

So, yesterday’s bleak, dreary and cold day was not very motivating. We have had a wonderful spring this year in Ohio, so I cannot complain. What I realized is that I needed to look outside myself to find my motivation.  I thought about how much I like running in the rain. In fact, almost all of my favorite runs have been in the rain. There is something very innocent and purifying about running in the rain.  I love how I never get hot in the rain. It is refreshing.

So I threw on my baseball cap to keep the raindrops out of my eyes so my eyes could stay on the road. On went the armband with my iTunes set just right. Tossed on the Akron CrossFit jacket to protect the iPhone. Laced up the inov-8 running shoes and out I went.

As soon as my first foot hit the ground, I knew I made the right decision and I never looked back.  In fact, I never even thought about my “out.”  When I am lacking motivation, I always tell myself “self, give it five minutes. If after five minutes you are in misery, you can go home.”   I have never gone home. My five-am mantra is “you are going to be just as tired in an hour… So just get up!”  It works.  I always get up when I alter my thinking.  It truly is mind over matter!

The rain was invigorating. I dressed just right so I was neither cold nor warm. By the end, I was wet from head to toe, and my legs were cold to the touch, but warm inside. By mile three, the rain had stopped and I enjoyed the change. I logged 4.1 miles without a struggle. It is a very hilly course with one “mountain” at the end of mile three… No problem!

It was an incredible run. Just as I made my last turn home, iTunes started “Whiskey in the Jar” and I ran like a mother the rest of the way home… To my three little hearts waiting at the door!  I am glad I looked outside myself!

In The Works!!

I have been having horrible neck pain for the past 6-8 months and I have no idea why…. Well, maybe I have a clue or three.  My daughter is three and a half and weighs 36 pounds.  My twin boys are 21 months and weigh 30 pounds each.  One of them is ALWAYS attached to my left hip.  Usually it is Cash, but when he feels independent, Romans hops on.  When they are busy, Mia wants a turn.  I am fortunate I do CrossFit because I cannot imagine how much worse it would be if I didn’t stay in shape.  I am strong and healthy and I try really hard to maintain great posture, but after lugging 30 pounds around for more that 15 minutes, and I am sure my posture is less than perfect!

Needless to say, massage therapy… or should I say torture, has helped immensely.  I have a wonderful massage therapist named John that really knows how to crush the knots.  He is comparable to the incredible hulk… especially when he hits the tight spots!  Even with his help, my migraines from muscle strain have continued.  I tend to “tighten up” more on my left side (non-dominant side that I carry the kids) but I do have issues with my right side too.  Actually, I have issues with my entire musculature… just ask John!

Anyway, I am in the process of developing a muscle serum for knots and tension.  I am testing it right now and perfecting the recipe.  So far, I think it has made a difference.  It will be a blend of organic extra virgin olive oil infused with cayenne pepper, menthol crystals, eucalyptus, rosemary and clary sage.  The ‘heat” therapy is the cayenne pepper and the “cold” therapy is the menthol.  The eucalyptus, rosemary and clary sage help to relax and loosen tight muscles and knots.  I apply 2-3 drops to the affected area 2-3 times a day and more frequently when I ham having issues.  Today was a “migraine day” and after three applications and some self-massage, the migraine and muscle ache was gone after about 4 hours.  I hope to have this ready for sale by summer time.

I always love guinea pigs, so if anyone is interested, please contact me through the website.

FINALLY!!! PALEO SKINCARE!!!!

I have been making organic, skincare products for three years.  I have been doing CrossFit for two years and I have been eating paleo for almost two years.  I have decided to combine the three aspects that have changed my life forever and provide organic, paleo skincare options for those looking to detoxify their skincare cabinet.  I am not an extreme CrossFitter, but my husband is.  He is co-owner of CrossFit Akron and he introduced me to this lifestyle over three years ago.  We now raise our three young children doing CrossFit and eating paleo.  I wonder how many people realize they can sabotage a healthy eating plan with the skincare products they are using?  Why add chemicals, toxins and wheat into your body via the skin, hair and body products you are using?  I believe in providing healthy, clean skincare products that will not sabotage the healthy lifestyle you work so hard for.   I am a true 21st century Cavegirl who has decided to venture out into the wilderness in search of other Cavegirls and Caveboys looking to detoxify their skincare regime.  Welcome to Primal Life Organics! Our products will not sabotage your hard work!!
